I am afraid that this stems back to the 1950s when an American TV show was shown in the UK.
It was a series about Davy Crockett which featured Fess Parker in the title role. This series was an outstanding success. The main reason was because of his hat.
Now every kid wanted a Davy Crockett hat. In the UK, at that time, the economy was not too good. So if you could not afford to buy one you had to look for an alternative.
In the UK there is little call for Beavers or Raccoons so something a bit more local was needed. And the answer was CATS.
So, all the youngsters scouted around their neighbourhoods captured all the cats and skinned them thus making their highly prized hats. They normally preferred female cats as the Toms were a bit smelly.
So there is! The reason that the UK is devoid of cats.
